Founded in 1995, the Article 29 Working Party, or Article 29 Data Protection Working Party, as it is also known, is a European advisory body.

Each state within the European Union has a representative that sits on the body and makes decisions on data protection laws and standards of citizens within the EU. Most recently, the Article 29 Data Protection Working Party has been involved in refining the draft guidance of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).

The Working Party generally opens up discussion for public consultation via the EU states’ governing bodies, in the UK’s case this is the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Despite the European Commission connection, the Article 29 Working Party advisory body works independently of any particular state.
