What is data processing?

Data processing is the term given to the act of classifying, categorising or manipulating information about a person or organisation.

In relation to personal data, data processing will likely include an outsourced service like a data centre. They may never see the data itself but will have control over its Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability (CIA).

The Data Protection Act sets out guidelines for data processors.
